My boyfriend and I just moved to the area recently so we are in the process of discovering new restaurants. The other night we were craving one of our favorites, mexican food. We remembered passing this place a few weeks ago and the art on the outside of the restaurant really caught our eye. So...with nothing to lose, we decided to stop in and give it a try. Now, perhaps we are just too accustomed to living in a state in which delicious authentic mexican food is easy to come by, but this place left a horrible taste in my mouth...literally and figuratively... I wish we would have not wasted our time and money on this place and just had gone to Taco Bell. It would have been 5-star compared to this atrocity. Where to begin. Yes, the outside looks eclectic and cool, but the inside is riddled with outdated tacky decor. Once you move past that, if you still manage to maintain your appetite, it's time to indulge in a $30 case of indigestion. We ordered guacamole along with chips and salsa. The salsa...if you can even call it that, was watery and bland...that is, if you don't count the sporadic overpowering cilantro sprinkled in. Even jarred salsa from Publix tastes better than that sad, sad attempt. The chips were okay, but the guac had absolutely no flavor and a weird consistency. I ordered a chicken quesadilla, and upon first glance the outside was crispy and toasted to perfection. After my first bite, I wanted to vomit. The shredded chicken was kind of watery, a strange light brown color (?) and tasted like it was marinated in toilet water. Even thinking about it turns my stomach. On top of it all, we never once got a smile or a "you're welcome" from our waiter. I don't think he even spoke more than a few words to us the whole time. I'm really hoping to find another restaurant in this area that serves delicious, flavorful mexican cuisine with a great atmosphere and excellent service..something that you will NOT find at La Cocina!!!

For starters the service was lacking. 10 min to get chops and water. The salsa was watery and had way too much cilantro. The prices are too high for the portions as well. The food was actually quite bland overall. Had the burrito and girlfriend had enchiladas. Both left a lot to the imagination. Save yourself the time and money.....go elsewhere.

Always friendly staff! The best Mexican food I've eaten. The fajitas can't be beat! Don't let the location and exterior fool you, this place is world class flavor.

A hidden gem. Everything from burritos to duck. Prices are more than fair and you won't leave hungry.

It's not la nopalera, moe's or chilli's - in other words, it's delicious home cooked Mexican-American grub

Unexpectedly good. I had wanted to try this place when they were farther north on US1, but never made it in. Honestly, I wasn't sure that I'd find good mexican food in St Augustine. I'm happy to report that this place is a solid choice. Before the food, the decor is worth noting. The walls of the dining room(s) are covered in murals that provide a very realistic feel of being in the Mexican countryside. It appears that an artist was allowed to use the place as a canvas and the results are stunning. With the lighting and the table/placesettings, the atmosphere is perfect for a romantic (although not dimly lit when I was there) evening. Our meals were excellent. I had seafood, my wife had chicken enchiladas. I've only been here once but based on the preparation and quality of the food, I assume most of their dishes are very good. The worst thing about the place is that it can be hard to find. It's in plain sight, but is right next to a storage place, whose sign dominates. Going south on US1, look left.

We had quite a lovely dinner of taco salads. The salsa is very good with lots of fresh veggies and not too overly hot. I feel that La Cocina ranks up there amongst the best I have had. The decor is quaint and the ambiance is soothing. They are just off of Route 1 and are very convenient!

I've found the reviews on this place to be very hit-or-miss. Not only the reviews here on Yelp, but also other websites, and even recommendations by friends... Some people LOVE this place, some people HATE this place... Me, I thought it was pretty darn good. Perhaps it's just like any other restaurant, it all depends on when you show up. I went for lunch, and the place was pretty much empty, me and about 5 other tables. I was seated immediately after walking in, and the first thing I noticed was the awesome decor. From the outside, there is a lot of loud colors and neon signs, but the inside, great murals, great decorations, nice music playing through the speakers. After ordering drinks, I was served chips and fresh made salsa, and it was fantastic. The salsa was unbelievably fresh and tasty, nice and cool, and the chips were crisp and yummy. The menu looked pretty good, there were a lot of choices on there, and it was hard to nail down a choice. I finally decided on the taco salad with ground beef. After about ten minutes, this plate of deliciousness arrived on my table. A hot, crispy, crunchy shell, filled with ground beef, lettuce, tomato, and cheese, with fresh guacamole, sour cream, black beans, and salsa on the side of the plate, all served with a small Mexican Flag in the food. The portion was pretty damn big, and the price was only around 8 dollars, I left completely full and didn't have to pay much for it. All in all, the food was tasty, fresh, and I was completely satisfied. The service was great, and I loved the atmosphere. I will definitely be back.

La Cocina is a quaint restaurant with great atmosphere and decor. Their fajitas are amazing and fish millanaise is equally good!!! The best of all is their sangria!!!! The pitcher of it is a bit pricey but well worth it if u r a foodie. The menu is well balanced and over the years i have tried almost everything on it. I am never disappointed!! The great menu is matched by great, prompt, and friendly service. Prices are fair. I strongly recommend it because the food speaks for itself!!

OK I wasn't expecting Tex-Mex at the San Antonio level but I had been wanting to try this place for awhile. I was let down and if you guys at La Cocina ever read this, and I hope you do, take heed my friend and maybe you'll increase your customer base. I ordered steak tacos and my wife ordered Carnitas. The food came and the portions were decent, but our food was cold. The refried beans were just barely room temp. I would rather have my plate nuked in the microwave rather then getting it cold. My wife, always the keen observer, said "You know, it doesn't smell like they are cooking there..." No steam rising from the plate, everything was just room temp. The guacamole was warmer then the tacos. The food tasted good so it wasn't a total disaster. But, I didn't shell out more then a twenty for cold food. The only other thing was that I asked for salsa picante (that's hot sauce for you gringos reading this!). The waiter brought out this dish that had the most strangest looking salsa picante I've ever seen. It looked like someone mixed cream in brown hot sauce. It wasn't very good or very hot either. So look here cooks of La Cocina, HEAT the food up before you serve it. Toss it in a pan, broil it, keep it under a heat lamp or in a warming tray. Microwave is a last resort but its better then cold. Fix that salsa picante situation, just put some Jalapenos in a food processor with some garlic and onion or whatever, you can do it! I'm dying for some decent Mexican food over here. Go get a cookbook if you have to. The decorations bordered cheesy and in my opinion they would have been better off without the murals. You know how Italian places got stereotyped with red -white checked tableclothes, and chianti bottles hanging all over? This place pushes those same buttons, only Mexican style.

I have been to this place a few times now with my fiancee'. La Cocina was the location of our second date and I could not have chosen a better location. The staff is very friendly and pays close attention to the detail of your order as to ensure there are no mistakes. I have not tried everything on the menu yet, I sure plan to though. My favorite item thus far is the taco salad with the delicious fresh salsa and guacamole on the side. I highly recommend this restaurant. I typical drop about $30 for the both of us to eat here (includes 15% tip) and I feel it is well worth the money.

So, I might have been expecting too much, given my friends' yummy sounds and excitement at the prospect of dining here. It's at a strange location, which is fine... there are plenty of those in St. Augustine. The wait was awful long! The staff ignored us for a good 5 minutes (you know, they look at you, don't smile or say hello or just a moment please, just go about what they were doing as though you were their own reflection). And THEN when they have time for you they're sweet as sunshine. The service was pretty good once we got seated and ordered. The food... I've had way better. I didn't tasteanything impressive. And I got a mad tummy ache within an hour of leaving. My friends LOOOOOOVED it. That's why I gave them two stars; on the possibility that I might have some unknown allergy, while the food is actually okay. Only okay though. I won't go back.

Middle of the road, food was very bland and the restaurant has poor lighting. Portions were minimal, but presented well. Iced tea is from the soda fountain, not brewed. Service was adequate, but asked how food was until the end if the meal. One of those times you walk out dropping $50+ and totally regret trying the place. Ain't going back....

Food was superb as was the service and margaritas. I'll be back - very satisfied. My daughter had the quesadillas and I had the chimichanga. Despite what I've read from other reviews read (and I'm still surprised) this place is spot on. I disagree with the poor ratings I've read. Our experience was great. It's as real and authentic as it gets.

Great food, good service. I enjoy coming here more during lunch time, I've always had the best luck with service then and it's not as busy. My favorite thing to get is the chicken chimichanga. It's like good comfort food. And guacamole is really good too.

We picked this place when visiting St. Augustine due to the positive reviews. Our experience was not as positive. With a family of five one small salsa just doesn't cut it. Especially if you take 15 minutes before coming to take our order. It would have been excusable if the restaurant was packed however we were one of three parties there. Once ordered the food also took a long time to get to us. The food was not bad even if the price was a little high and portions a little small. However, we did not have a good experience.

I was in the mood for Mexican and when another place we went to was closed, we came upon this place. I am so glad the other place was closed. This is authentic mexican. We started with chips and salso. This salsa isnt out of a jar, thats for sure. You can tell it was freshly made. I loved the sweet tea... hey, I'm southern. The ground beef chimichunga was served with refried beans and rice. It wasnt deep fried but pan fried so it wasnt greasy. It was flavorful and delicious. I will go there again!

My wife and I decided to try this out to escape the St George Street scene. The restaurant has a very cozy atmosphere and the staff are very welcoming. The guacamole, tamales, and burrito were all great. Their house made hot sauce was the best we've had in a while. Prices were also very good. The only complaint to be had was that the salsa was a bit watery and the black beans were a bit off.

Visited for the first time last night after wanting to try this place for months. It did not disappoint! The building from the outside may be slightly unappealing, but after walking in and being warmly greeted I felt cozy and welcomed. The decor was modest, I almost felt like I was in a Mexican home :) it is rather small, so for big parties I would call ahead. Their menu was a step above some of the other regular Mexican fare. They had scallops and other seafood options to choose from too. Our waiter recommended carne Asada, rellenos, or chimichangas--my boyfriend ordered the carne Asada and said his steak was cooked to perfection. Hard to cook flank stank correctly without it being over cooked, they nailed it. Thought the rustic pico de gallo on the plate was different, but super citrusy and bright! Delicious! Thanks la cocina for a great pre birthday dinner. We will be back :)

Ok, I'm going to admit right away that the ONLY reason why I bookmarked this place was because I saw a chimichanga drowned in queso. Alright. When we pulled up we were surprised to see how many cars were in the lot and that there was such a steady flow of people going in so I thought that maybe Yelp was just being a little stingy. Hm. We were seated quickly and also quickly decided that we would get a beef chimichanga and a chicken chimichanga. We also ordered some guac and a margarita. The guac was...not good. It tasted like my first attempts at making guacamole when I would throw everything in there and just expect that all the limes would make it good. It didn't then, and it doesn't now. The margarita was AWFUL. The ice melted in two seconds and I was left with the equivalent of a melted blue slushy, whatever that flavor is. The 'changas were...ok, I guess. My finacee seemed to enjoy his, but my shredded chicken had that thawed-from-the-freezer kind of consistency. The rice also sucked, the beans were good though but they came in a cup the size of a thimble. The bottom line is that I tried it despite the fact that the reviews weren't great and I received my payback. Definitely won't be back!

Stop by for lunch the jalapeño cheese dip was good... Would not recommend the chicken quesadilla.. No flavor very bland and expensive for the portion size.. Service was good and fast. Will try something else on next visit to Saint Augustine

Stopped in for lunch. We were seated right away and the waitress came right over. She didn't have much personality but was attentive. Fajitas were not on the lunch menu but the did offer to prepare them if we wanted. The enchiladas were a decent portion and tasted good. Just didn't like the mole sauce. The fajitas were well seasoned but the onions and peppers were undercooked.

Fajitas are set on fire at your table. They feature homemade tortillas. Best entree was the shredded chicken flautas. Salsa was flavorful. Queso was ok, but far too watery for my liking. Three enchiladas were all good with cheese being best followed by chicken and then beef. Sangria was too sweet and lacked any distinctive flavor.

Love this place! The great... Salsa in wonderful! Fajitas divine! Quick service and reasonably priced! Creative decor and atmosphere. Could be improved... Honestly for me nothing! I'm can be pretty picky but have no suggested improvements! Highly recommend!!

We went to the restaurant last night with some friends who came into town. The food was very good. The service was great up until the end of the meal. We were finishing up dinner as they were ready to close when they started trying to pick up our plates before we were even finished. They then brought over the check and stood there waiting and watching until we paid the check. We were then sitting outside to finish our visit when they turned off the lights on us. Not the best way to finish off a great meal. Too bad that will be our LAST impression of this restaurant.

Good food- not your typical Californian Mexican food but still up there in ratings. The male waiter was nice- the female waiter had more of a cold faced attitude. The atmosphere is very Mexico feeling. The salsa needs some improvement and they charge for chips and salsa which was a little crazy. All in all- a good place but not up there in standards

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
